Queer Eye 🌈
First and foremost, Queer Eye. These TV shows are the epitome of self-love, self-worth, and self-care. They also emphasize self-accountability for their heroes to grow, get out of their own way, and become their best selves. Or at least start the process.
My favorite theme throughout these TV shows (in every version of it, not just Queer Eye: More Than a Makeover), is that at the end of the day, we all want the same things out of life regardless of background, experiences, gender, culture, etc. We all go through struggles in our lives. Being a human is hard. We all need some help to show ourselves love and care and also want to be accepted, loved, and respected for our authentic selves. And that it’s important to choose ourselves too.
Sometimes it takes an outsider (or 5 fabulous queer people) to see you and your life through a clearer lens. It’s easy to get lost and blinded by everyday life. Being a human and an adult can suck sometimes. There are moments when we need a shock to our system to get out of that rut.
We lose sight of how amazing, beautiful, and worthy we are. This show, through the heroes every week, reminds us to take care of ourselves. To love ourselves. And that we have the strength and power to change our lives, the Fab 5 simply gives a glamorous shove in the right direction. And introduces things that we can practice in our own lives too.
Don’t forget to check out the other Queer Eye’s too! They just go to show that the human experience is international.
All Queer Eye’s Available on Netflix:
- Queer Eye: More Than a Makeover
- Queer Eye: We’re in Japan!
- Queer Eye Brazil
- Queer Eye Germany

Love on the Spectrum ❤️
Love on the Spectrum makes me happy every single time I watch it. Seeing other people’s life experiences is always intriguing, eye-opening, and humbling. This TV show focuses on the dating experiences of people who are on the autism spectrum.
Similar to Queer Eye, these TV shows demonstrate that we all want and deserve to be loved for our authentic selves. And, that it’s important to stay true to ourselves and make the best choices for us. It’s also important to be vulnerable and willing to grow to get what we want in life.
This show also demonstrates the nuances and intricacies of dating and social interactions that people don’t really talk about anymore. Dating etiquette is so complex when broken down and all the unspoken rules come to light.
And that it’s important to be polite and respectful, but it’s okay if you don’t want to pursue someone further. People don’t click sometimes, and that’s totally okay. And although it does hurt if feelings aren’t reciprocated, you can still be respectful of that person.
At the end of the day, you have to do what’s right for you. And it’s important to try.
Love on the Spectrum’s Available on Netflix:
- Love on the Spectrum (US)
- Love on the Spectrum Australia
Down for Love 🥰
Down for Love focuses on the dating experiences of people who have Down syndrome. Again, like Queer Eye and Love on the Spectrum, it demonstrates that we all want and deserve to be loved for our authentic selves.
Again, this show demonstrates how dating etiquette is so complex with the different nuances and intricacies of dating and social interactions.
It’s important to know what you want and your worth and to have the confidence to try. Regardless of what it is, but especially for dating and trying to find love. It’s important to be vulnerable and willing to grow. As long as you stay true to your authentic self, what’s meant to be will find you.

One Day at a Time 💛 (2017-2020)
One Day at a Time is such a gem.
“…the series follows the life of Penelope, a newly single Army veteran, and her Cuban-American family, as they navigate the ups and downs of life. Now a nurse, Penelope[Justina Machado] is raising two strong-willed children. When faced with challenges, Penelope turns to her “old-school” mother[Rita Moreno], and her building manager[Todd Grinnell], who has become an invaluable confidant. The series offers a contemporary take on what life looks like in both good and bad times, and how loved ones can help make it all worthwhile,” (rottentomatoes.com). It has a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
This show does not shy away from real struggles that people and families go through, such as being a veteran and dealing with the VA, PTSD, intricacies, and experiences of the LGBTQIA+ community and their families, sexism, deportation, and everything else in between. While also being a sitcom and being hilarious. You can’t help but love the characters, and root for them during their journies.
*Please note, seasons 1-3 are available on Netflix. Season 4 is produced by Pop, so it is available on a different streaming service.*

Survival of the Thickest 💁🏽♀️
Survival of the Thickest follows Mavis portrayed by Michelle Buteau. “After a bad breakup, passionate stylist Mavis Beaumont seizes the opportunity to start over in life and love while finding happiness on her own terms,” (Netflix).
This show is fabulous, hilarious, and relatable. It promotes self-love, self-worth, and self-empowerment.
Without revealing anything too much, my favorite part of the show is the end of the first episode when Mavis says to her ex, “Here the fuck I am.” It is SO powerful. I texted my mom right after I watched it and told her to watch it immediately lol. Trust me, you’ll watch it and go “Yaasssss queen”!

Sweet Magnolias 🌸
Easily one of Netflix’s best shows is Sweet Magnolias. “Lifelong friends Maddie[JoAnna Garcia Swisher], Helen[Heather Headley] and Dana Sue[ Brooke Elliott] lift each other up as they juggle relationships, family and careers in the small, Southern town of Serenity,” (Netflix).
Through the ups and downs of this show, these three women show strength, respect, and love for themselves and others. They work hard for everything they want in life and also show that sometimes, no matter how strong you are, you need to be vulnerable and willing to grow to become a better version of yourself. And that it is okay to choose yourself and your happiness too.

Glamorous ✨
Last but certainly not least, is Glamorous. “Marco Mejia[Miss Benny] is a young gender non-conforming queer man whose life seems to be stuck in place until he lands a job working for legendary makeup mogul Madolyn Addison[Kim Cattrall]. Its Marco’s first chance to figure out what he wants out of life, who he actually is, and what it really means for him to be queer,” (rottentomatoes.com).
Unfortunately, it was not renewed after the first season, but it is still worth the watch. I love that Marco’s storyline demonstrates the universal struggles of dating, feeling pressure to change who you are for the person you’re dating, and the importance of remembering your true self. It’s easy to fall into that narrative. It takes strength, courage, and vulnerability to live as your truly authentic self.
Plus, the scene where they do the lip-sync contest is EVERYTHING!! A must-see.
